The most effective way to give students an appreciation for books is to have them create one themselves. In Page Consciousness: The development of writing with illustration, researcher Paul Johnson found that when teachers gave their students a blank book, they were more motivated to write. The students came up with very creative stories and illustrations that they then shared with their class. The experience got them excited about writing and as a result, made them stronger readers and writers.
